Touch matters for parents and babies |

"Feeding babies with touch, giving food to their skin and their backs, is just as important as filling their stomachs." Dr Frederick Leboyer – The Traditional Art of Baby Massage Being parents for the first time can be a stress-filled adjustment to your lives. Learning to massage your baby can help you as parents handle these changes in more effective ways, resulting in a strong relationship between you and child. As I watch my 7 and 4 year olds play with their dolls, I am often reminded how natural rocking and soothing touch is. Instinctively they know to rock, pat and rub their babies as they comfort them. Unfortunately somewhere is our modern stress-filled world many of us have forgotten that the most soothing and comforting way that we can help our babies is with touch. Touch is the first sense to develop after conception and this is why one of the baby’s primary needs is touch. As the baby grows inside its mother it is gently massaged as it develops. As it develops so it feels all her movements and has a wonderful massage by the amniotic fluid. For most babies the most powerful massage occurs in the birth canal, as it is massaged during labour into its new world. We all need touch throughout our lives, not just to thrive, but to survive. |

Baby Eczema Atopic eczema is a very common problem amongst children and babies affecting around 1 in 5 children. It is characterized by dry, flaky skin that is very itchy and in its acute form the skin becomes reddened, scaly and in some areas the skin may be wet and weepy. In babies, the face and scalp are most commonly affected. As they get older, it spreads to involve the body and limbs, with the limb creases – backs, wrists, ankle and neck, and the front of the elbows being the most commonly affected sites. |

I could have bashed my baby’s head against the wall I lay in bed, my jaw and hands clenched with anger, thinking, “if I go into his bedroom I am going to bash his head against the wall and then at least there’ll be silence and I can get some sleep”. I was referring to Cameron, my 7 month old. Cameron was born in 2003 and was a text book baby. He slept right through the night from 4 months, but started teething at 7 months and started waking at night. Being first time round parents we didn’t know why he was waking or what to do. We panicked and our instinct was to pat Cameron on the back. This put him back to sleep, but unbeknown to us we were implementing what Baby Love terms a ‘sleep prop’, something a parent has to do to their baby in order to get him back to sleep. There are various sleep props - rocking, driving around the block, bouncing on a birthing ball - the list is endless. Our weapon of choice was patting. |
